The Caliph Abu Bakr, (R.A), wrote to his army leader Khaled Ibn al-Walid, concerning the people of Al-Hira in Iraq who were Christians telling him the way he should deal with them: “and provide for any elderly person too weak to work, or suffering from disease, or was rich but in now poor, and those of his faith provide him charity, then remove his jizyah (tax) and provide from the public treasury for him and his family”.
