Ibn Taymiyyah says, “The scholars and people of the Sunnah would not excommunicate (accuse of disbelief) those who disagreed with them, even if such a disagreement landed them in disbelief. For disbelief is a legal judgment and a person is not to be punished in kind. Such as if someone lies to you and commits adultery with your family; you would not lie to him and fornicate with his family. Because lying and adultery are forbidden by Allah. Similarly, Takfir is the right of Allah, and none are charged with disbelief except those whom Allah and His Messenger have charged.” (Majmoa Al-Fatawa, Vol. 3)
