From the forms of tolerance in the history of Islam is the acts of Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi on the day of the conquest of Jerusalem in 1187. On that day, there was a hundred thousand Christians, to whom he assured their safety for a period of forty days to evacuate Jerusalem. Some eighty-four thousand left and reunited with their families in Acre. He himself paid for the release of a few thousand and so did his brother Abubakar al-Adel. He pardoned the Christians from what they did to the Muslims when they occupied the city in 1099.
