The Muslim scholars were very aware of risking their Iman by avoiding any affiliation could plunge them into any suspicious group.   The Kharijites came to the great Tabi’i Muftir ibn Abdullah to call him to their views. He said: “If I had two souls I would have pledged the allegiance of one of them. If what you say is guided then the other soul would follow, and if it is misguided, then one soul would perish and one would remain. However, we only have one soul so I will not deceive it.
