Shaykh ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Sa’di said: “From his names – the Almighty – is al-Rafeeq (the Most Kind) which is taken from tenderness, which is to take care and practice gradation in one’s affairs. Its opposite is violence which is to be rough and rash…The explanation of this name is taken from the saying – peace be upon him -: “Allah is Forbearer and He loves forbearance, and rewards for forbearance while He does not reward severity, and does not give for any thing besides it (forbearance)”… He – the Almighty – is tender in His commands and prohibitions. He did not charge His servants with difficult commands in one go, but through gradual preparation until they become accustomed to it and it becomes part of their nature. A person who approaches things with kindness and gradation, in line with the Sunnah of Allah and His prophet (PBUH), issues are made easy for him, particularly for those engaging in dawah to the truth, for they require kindness of softness. Allah said, “And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend.” (Fussilat: 34)
