The Caliph Umar bin Abdul Aziz was known for his kindness and compassion toward his people. One of his sons one day said to him: O father, why do you tolerate some behaviours?! God forbid, if I were your place, I would fear no one and take the side of truth. The caliph said to his son, Do not be rush, my son. Allah has cursed wine twice in the Qur’an and forbade it in the third time. I fear that if I was to guide the people to the truth in one go, they would reject it and it would become a fitnah (disorder). His son left satisfied reassured by his father’s good policy. He learned that the mercy of his father is not weakness, but the result of his understanding of his religion.
