Ibn Ashoor says, “Leniency has had a major influence on the spread of the Shariah and its longevity. It knew that ease is part of man’s natural disposition, as people love ease and kindness. As such, Allah has despised how the polytheists defile and corrupt the nature of His creation and attributed such deeds as acts of the devil in the words, “I will mislead them, and I will create in them false desires; I will order them to slit the ears of cattle, and to deface the (fair) nature created by Allah.” [al-Nisa; 119]. The wisdom of lenience in the Shariah is that Allah made it in accordance with man’s natural disposition (fitrah) and that a natural religion is one that is instinctual. It exists in the soul and is easily accepted. Part of man’s natural disposition is an aversion to severity. Allah says, “Allah doth wish to lighten your (difficulties): For man was created Weak (in flesh)”. [Al-Nisa; 28] Allah wanted Islam’s Shariah to be a general and lasting law, which requires ease of implementation among all nations, and this is only possible if it is free from severity”.
