The Independent newspaper reported that Muslim women in Switzerland fear they could be assaulted after the country voted, with a slim majority of 51%, in favour of banning niqab in public places, noting that many fear the increase in violations of their rights.
Foreign Policy Magazine noted that the ironic timing of the new Burqa ban in Switzerland proves that it was not due to security concerns, but to normalize anti-Muslim discrimination. The number of Muslims wearing Burqas is no more than 37 in Switzerland.
With a slim majority of 51.2%, Swiss voters voted in favour of Niqab ban in public. Activists said it violates Muslim women's rights. The Swiss government argued against the ban as it would reduce the number of tourists from Islamic countries.
Muslim activists have expressed their strong dissatisfaction due to Switzerland coming referendum that could ban Niqab with an expected majority vote for the ban, believing it to be a first step to harassment of Muslims and growth of Islamophobia in the society.
