When the Tartars conquered the Levant, Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah went to speak to their leader Ghazan Khan for the release of the prisoners. The Tatar commander instructed the release of the Muslim prisoners but not that of the dhimmis. This led the Shaykh al-Islam to say: We will not be satisfied unless all the captives including the Jews and Christians are released as they are under our protection. We will not leave neither Muslim nor dhimmi prisoner behind Muslim. When he saw his determination and rigor he released them all.” (Majmoo’ al-Fatawa. Vol. 28)
