The character of Muslims with non-Muslims is that they do not backbite them. It is recorded in the Hanafi book al-Durr al-Mukhtar: “We must stay prevent harm to the dhimmi, and are prohibited from back biting them as is the case with Muslims.” Ibn Abidin commented saying, “because in a dhimmi contract, they are given the dues of Muslims, and if it is prohibited to back bite a Muslim, it is also the case for the non-Muslim, and some say that injustice towards a dhimmi is a greater injustice.” (al-Durr al-Mukhtar and Hashiyah Ibn Abidin Vol. 3, 249)
