Concealing the faults of the servants of Allah offers them the opportunity of repentance and righteousness. Ibn Umar reports: I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (pbub) when he came to Hirmala ibn Zayd al-Ansari, one of the sons of Haritha. He sat in the hands of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) and said, “Faith is here, and pointed his hand to his tongue, and hypocrisy here, and put his hand on his chest, and we do not remember God except a little”. The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) remained silent so Hirmala repeated himself. The Prophet (pbuh) then took Hirmala by the tongue and said: O my Lord give him a truthful tongue, a heart full of gratitude, grant him my love, and the love of those who love me, and guide him to righteousness. Hirmala then said to him: “O Messenger of Allah, I have brothers who are hypocrites and I was chief among them. Should I not reveal them to you? The Messenger of Allah said: “He who comes to us as you came, we will forgive them as we have forgiven you. And whoever insists (in their hypocrisy) then Allah is most deserving (of their punishment) and we will not violate anyone’s secret.” (Narrated by Ibn Naeem and Ibn Mundah)
